PDAIS 030 – Extras I

PDAIS 030 will be out soon, but it’s already being overtaken by events, since part of the podcast deals with our review of this year’s “Eurovision Song Contest”.

Last night was the first semi-final, which means some of the songs we will be discussing have already been knocked out. Ten songs/countries have been voted through to Saturday’s final, and you can read all about it at the official website here.

There were a few surprises.  I thought it was fairly obvious that Norway (a very early favourite but long since overtaken by others) and Poland (another fan favourite) would go out, but I think a lot of people will be surprised that Turkey didn’t make it through. In recent years, it had started to feel like they had automatic entry to the final, but this year it was not to be; a shame really, as the song had started to grow on me recently.

As usual there were some good songs and some not so good songs, as well as some good singers and some not so good singers.  Sometimes the good and the bad even coincided and sometimes they didn’t. Croatia just reeked of desperation as they did everything they could to distract the audience from noticing how bad the song was. Georgia (the country not the state) gave a good performance that visually suited the song, while Armenia just looked silly. A lot of people had started tipping Lithuania to go through and there was no doubt they had a good singer, but I thought the song was strictly average at best. Otherwise, things were more or less as expected (apart from Turkey going out – have I mentioned that already?).

Anyway, another 19 songs/countries line up on Thursday, and another ten of them will win through to Saturday. Place your bets now on who will go through:

  1. Turkey came 13th in the end and so were a little off making it. The big surprise was that Malta was 11th and missed out on the final by just 1 point! Had no one heard the song or something? I had that one down to come last.
